Rock Climbing at El Potrero Chico

El Potrero Chico has routes from 5.4 upward, so beginners are welcome on Rock-About’s guided trips. However, multi-pitch routes require some climbing experience. Our guides tailor the trip to your level — we’ll select the perfect routes whether you’re new to multi-pitch or an experienced climber.

Drive south from Austin or San Antonio to the border crossing at Laredo or McAllen, then continue to Hidalgo, Nuevo León—approximately 3 hours south of the border. On Rock-About's guided trips, we handle all logistics including driving, border crossing guidance, and local arrangements.

Primarily multi-pitch sport climbing on stunning limestone walls towering over 1,000 feet. There are also single-pitch sport routes and some trad options. The rock quality is world-class—clean limestone with positive holds.

Walls tower over 1,000 feet (300+ meters). Classic routes like 'El Sendero Luminoso' are over 1,500 feet tall. Even if you're not climbing the biggest walls, shorter multi-pitch routes of 200-500 feet offer incredible experiences.

November through March offers the best temperatures. Avoid summer—extreme heat makes climbing dangerous and unpleasant. Holiday weeks (Christmas/New Year) are popular. Rock-About typically runs trips between November and March.
