FAQs

  • What is deep water soloing (DWS)?

Deep water soloing is rock climbing on natural cliffs above deep water—without ropes or harnesses. When you fall (or finish a route), you splash safely into the water below. Rock-About's DWS tour at Lake Travis is the only guided boat climbing experience in the United States. We take you by boat directly to the best limestone cliffs.

  • Can beginners do deep water soloing?

Absolutely! No climbing experience is needed. Rock-About's AMGA-certified guides coach you from the boat, starting on lower walls (5-10 feet) and building your confidence before progressing to taller cliffs. The water below is your safety net.

  • Is deep water soloing dangerous?

With Rock-About, no. Our guides assess water depth at every climbing spot before anyone climbs, limit groups to 6 people for personal attention, and carry safety equipment on the boat. We've been running DWS tours since 2001 with 25+ years of safe climbing adventures. Falls are expected and celebrated!

  • What should I wear for deep water soloing?

Swimsuit and shoes you don't mind getting wet (water shoes or old sneakers). Bring a towel, sunscreen, water, and sunglasses. We provide the boat, instruction, and all the adventure. No climbing gear needed—that's the beauty of DWS.

  • Do you need to know how to swim for DWS?

Basic swimming ability is required since you'll be in water after climbing. Life jackets are available on the boat for less confident swimmers. If you have concerns, let your guide know—we accommodate all comfort levels.
