FAQs

  • What is traditional (trad) rock climbing?

Traditional climbing means placing your own removable protection (cams and nuts) into natural rock features as you climb, rather than clipping pre-installed bolts. It's considered the purest form of climbing and gives you access to routes where bolts don't exist.
  • Do I need lead climbing experience for a trad course?

Yes. Rock-About's Trad Course requires comfortable outdoor lead climbing ability (minimum 5.8 level). You should be confident clipping quickdraws, belaying a lead climber, and managing basic fall scenarios.
  • What gear is used in trad climbing?

Trad climbing uses removable protection: passive gear (nuts, hexes) and active gear (spring-loaded cams). Plus slings, cordelette, and the standard harness/rope/helmet setup. Rock-About provides all gear for the course—you don't need to buy anything.
  • Is trad climbing harder than sport climbing?

Trad climbing adds complexity (gear placement decisions) but routes aren't necessarily harder grades. Many trad routes are moderate (5.6-5.9). The mental challenge of placing your own protection is the main difference. Rock-About's course builds your confidence systematically.
  • Where can I practice trad climbing in Texas?

Enchanted Rock is Texas's premier trad climbing destination—the granite cracks are ideal for learning gear placement. Rock-About's Trad Course is frequently held there. Reimers Ranch also has some trad-friendly routes.
