FAQs

  • What experience do I need for a lead climbing course?

You should be comfortable top-rope climbing at a 5.8 or above level, either outdoors or in a gym. Basic belay and knot skills are expected. If you've taken Rock-About's Beginner Course, you're well-prepared for lead climbing.
  • What is the difference between top-rope and lead climbing?

In top-rope climbing, the rope runs through an anchor at the top of the route. In lead climbing, you clip the rope into protection points (quickdraws) as you climb upward. Lead climbing gives you independence—you can climb any bolted route without needing someone to set up a top rope first.
  • How dangerous is lead climbing?

Lead climbing involves more risk than top-rope because you can fall a short distance before the rope catches you. However, with proper training, this is manageable and safe. Rock-About's course includes controlled fall practice so you understand and manage the risks confidently.
  • Can I learn to lead climb outdoors instead of in a gym?

Absolutely—and we recommend it. Learning lead outdoors teaches you skills specific to real rock: reading natural features, assessing route quality, managing rope drag, and cleaning anchors. Rock-About's outdoor lead courses give you practical skills from day one.
  • How long does it take to learn lead climbing?

Rock-About's Lead Climbing Course is a full-day experience (~6 hours). Most students can confidently lead moderate routes by the end of the day. Becoming comfortable on harder routes takes additional practice, which our Advanced Lead Clinic supports.
